Results
The results clearly show cognitive dissonance. The participants were told that the task was interesting, however, they felt that it was not. They were all asked to lie to confederates perceived to be participating in the experiment next, that the tasks were in fact enjoyable. This forced the participants that were paid $1 to rationalize that what they were doing was enjoyable, because they had no other justification. The participants that received the $20 already had a previous justification(the $20) for completing the tasks, and thus rated it more highly(Cognitive Dissonance, 2010).
Implications
When peoples thoughts and actions conflict they use cognitive dissonance to justify their behaviors and reduce their discomfort (Simply Psychology, n.d.). This can be seen in many aspect of our lives and we all have used cognitive dissonance before. Some examples can be found in the Why The Audience Should Care section.
